A Clinical Study of The Oropharyngeal Malignant Tumors

Abstract
This report was a retrospective study of 209 cases of histologically proved oropha- ryngeal malignant tumors treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Cancer Research Hospital, from Dec. 1963 to Dec. 1976. The 3&5 year, follow up data of 101 patients & several important factors affecting the prognosis were analyzed. The results were as follos. 1) 1ncidence rates were 1.3%. 2) There were 145 males & 64 females with sex ratio of 2. 3: 1. Sex ratio was I: 1, 1 in malignant lymphoma, & 4.5: I in squamous cell Ca. and in others. 3) The age distribution was from 5 to 77 and predominant age groups were 6th, 7th, th, and 4th decades in order. 4) The mean age were 50. 1 in male, 45. 3 in female, and 45. 8 in total. It was 51. 8 in squamous cell Ca; and otheers, and 40. 6 in malignant lymphoma. The gap of mean age was about 10 years between these 2 groups. ) The mean duration of symytomatic period was 6. 6 mon¢¥ths. 6) Incidence of each structure were palatine tonsil 63. 6%, soft palate and uvula 20.1% anterior pillar 6.7% tongue base 3.8%, oropharyngeal wall 3.8%, and large volume tumor 2.0%. 7) Histopathologically, malignant tumors were composed of aquamous cell Ca. 52. 2%, malignant lymphoma 36. 4Fundifferentiated Ca. 7. 6%, others 3.8%, 8) In palatine tonsil, malignant tumors tumors were composed of squamous cell Ca. and others 66 cases, and malignant lymphoma 67 cases. 9) There were Tg & T4 lealons in 57(42. 9%), and palpable neck mass in 84 patients (63.2%), except malignant lymphoma. 10) In squamous cell Ca. and others groups, 3 & 5 year survival rates were 21.2% and 15. 2%. 11) Overall 3&5 year survival rates were 22.8% and 18.8%.
